We caught up with Simon and Schuster author, Suzanne Corso, to chat about her scandalous novel, how hard it was to get published and how her persistence led to some amazing things.

1. How/when did you decide to become a writer?
When I was 15 my grandmother came into my room and said “Bubelah, here write yourself out of this story.” She placed on my desk an old Smith Corona typewriter. I stared at it for a over a year. Then started writing. The first words I typed were Brooklyn Story and it stuck!

2. What was the publishing process like for you?
It’s a bit of a nightmare so don’t let anyone tell you different. Publishers and agents are bombarded with hundreds of thousands of submissions daily. I sent my manuscript to over 50 publishers and 50 agents, if not more, despite the fact that I wasn’t ready to publish due to the subject matter, which was my life. When I finally made the decision to move forward, I’d say it took a solid 5 years. Looking back it was worth every day I tried.

3. How were you able to bring your book to life?
By finally securing an agent. It went to my editor at Simon & Schuster and they called me in within a week. Well, the rest is history. I was honored to get my story out there. Simon & Schuster is a great house and have been very good to me. I am blessed.

4. How do you see writing as an empowering experience for yourself and other women?
My first book, Brooklyn Story, is about me growing up in Brooklyn in the 80’s and dating a high profile guy in organized crime, all while dealing with my crazy mother and Jewish grandmother. Let’s just say the best thing that came out of the abusive relationship with that boy was my book! I’m happy to share with other women that there is always a way out of it. Through faith and friends and organizations, you can escape any man. No man should ever dictate your life. They should only enhance it.

They should only enhance it.”

5. Is there a place, routine or ritual that you have when writing?

Yes, when it’s chapters and long documents. I’m at my desk with my three besties’ over head. Blessed Mother, Archangel Michael and Buddha. I think that’s pretty good company for thinking.

6. If you had to describe yourself in three words only, what would they be?
Fearless, Fun, Kind.

7. Do you have any exciting plans or projects coming up?
I just sold book 3, Hello Hollywood, the last book in the Brooklyn Story trilogy, to Simon & Schuster (to be released May 2015). It’s a very proud accomplishment for me considering where I’ve come from, how much I’ve endured as a woman and how much I will continue to do for other women.

I’m also heavy into my next trilogy and am selling Brooklyn Story for a television series. Here is where my fun really begins!
